This Week in the Rhema "Christian Yoga" Weekly...

In my life as a Christian yogi, I’ve met 3 main types of challengers to the idea of Christian Yoga being “okay” to do.

  1. The person who wants to do yoga, and maybe Christian Yoga, but isn’t sure if it’s something that is allowed, or healthy, or right to do.  These people have questions that they would love to have answered so that they can feel free to practice yoga again.
  2. The person who is sure that yoga is evil, and that Christian Yoga is evil, and that it’s all Hinduism in the end.  These people are often ex-yogis, as well as New Agers, who were experienced in a form of yoga that actually may have been demonic, and have decided that all yoga must therefore also be demonic.  They can be found saying that Christian Yoga is an oxymoron, or an impossibility.  I’ve found that attempting to answer questions or challenges from this group is a waste of time, and really is almost like arguing faith.
  3. Finally, there is a large swath of people that know little about all of this talk, and either are indifferent or casual about yoga in general.  This group may have a question for you now and again, especially if they have a run in from the people in item number 2, but generally, they just want to enjoy yoga or leave it alone.  If they come to you with questions, enjoy talking about it with them.

For some Christians, yoga may really be a bad idea – even Christian Yoga.

Let them live under such a premise until God tells them differently, knowing that he may never do so.  Only God knows their hearts and their walk.  You do not, and it’s not your place to judge what their opinion should be on yoga.

Whatever answers you decide upon for the challenges you hear, make sure that you really believe them, and that Holy Spirit confirms them.  You need to be able to speak with power and conviction when you discuss your practice, and in order to do that, it’s important to have a peace with your decision to practice yoga.

In all things, be sure you answer with love for the person challenging or questioning you.  We’re all in this together.

Be okay with whatever the questioner decides about yoga, and move on.
